Getting started

Quickstart

Get a working consent banner on your site in under 5 minutes.

This guide takes you from zero to a live consent banner. You'll create a site, install the loader, tag the scripts that need consent, and run your first cookie scan.

1. Create a site

Sign in to your dashboard and click New site. Enter your domain (for example, example.com). CookieCrumb generates a unique site ID you'll use in the loader snippet.

2. Install the loader

Add the following snippet to the <head> of every page, as early as possible. Placing it first means Google Consent Mode defaults are in place before any Google tag loads.

<script src="https://cookie-api.trishchuk.com/cdn/YOUR_SITE_ID/loader.js" defer></script>

The banner is live as soon as the snippet is on the page — there is no separate publish step. Every visitor choice is recorded in your consent log from then on.

3. Tag your non-essential scripts

The loader holds back scripts you mark with a category until the visitor grants it. Change the script's type to text/plain and add data-cc-category (preferences, analytics or marketing). Untagged scripts run as usual — CookieCrumb does not guess which ones are trackers. Google tags (gtag) are covered by Google Consent Mode v2, which the loader sets to denied by default.

<script type="text/plain" data-cc-category="analytics" src="https://example.com/analytics.js"></script>
On WordPress or Drupal, the official plugin does this tagging for you — map a script handle or library to a category on its settings screen.

4. Verify your domain

Before CookieCrumb crawls a site it needs proof you control it. In the dashboard, open Advanced Settings and publish the verification token as a DNS TXT record, a .well-known file, or a meta tag on your homepage, then click Verify.

5. Run your first scan

Open the Cookie Manager and click Scan now. CookieCrumb crawls your public pages, records the cookies it finds, and sorts known ones into categories; the rest are listed as Uncategorized. The scan usually finishes within a minute or two.

6. Customize the banner

Match the banner's layout, colors and copy to your brand on the Banner page. Changes reach visitors the next time the loader is fetched.
